Global Health Course for Medical Students in Asheville, North Carolina

John Hopkin’s student, Matt Burkey examines an older couple at homeFor the third year in a row, Shoulder to Shoulder and the Asheville and Hendersonville, NC Family Medicine and OB Residency programs will be offering a great opportunity in global health. The course will be offered as a two week experience in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina and include course work, group discussions, and several clinical experiences working with migrant populations in free clinics, the Health Department and a mini medical Spanish course. There is also time for mountain hiking and biking- perfect for late summer in the mountains.

Following the course in Asheville, we will be working as a team in a remote site in the mountainous part of Honduras –Concepcion, Intibuca. Shoulder to Shoulder is a not-for-profit, NGO (Non governmental organization) that has been committed to the area of the past 18 years providing health care, public health, nutrition services and girls empowerment programs to some of the poorest people in this hemisphere.

The cost for this trip is $900 for the month plus your plane fare which is approximately $600 from the Asheville area. Expect to hike often, eat traditional Honduran food, and ride in the back of trucks to remote areasWe are limiting the enrollment to 10 students maximum plus a small number of faculty and residents. Acceptances based on receipt of down payment and application to Shoulder to Shoulder for participation.
