Give a Computer Tablet

Dear Donor,

Eighth grade student, Jessica, was thrilled to receive a tablet from her teacher. The tablet was loaded with the Honduran curriculum for 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. Now, even though students only attend classes two days per week (due to the covid pandemic), the teacher can assign work to Jessica, and she can do it at home. There is no need for internet — the tablet came loaded with all the material she needed.

StS has provided 4500 tablets loaded with the Honduran curriculum to students in junior and senior high schools in rural Honduras. Tablets open the world to students….and allow them to continue their education!

Working with the US Embassy to Enhance Education

The United States Embassy in Honduras and Shoulder to Shoulder, Inc., work with the Honduran Ministry of Education to bring digital learning to rural HondurasThe U.S. Embassy Honduras, Public Affairs Section provided $110,000 in funding to Shoulder to Shoulder, for the development and distribution of digital curriculum via the Kolibri platform to more than 1250 children. This work supports the official Honduran textbooks and is being closely coordinated with the Honduran Ministry of Education who is assisting in the implementation.

This effort enhances educational opportunities of vulnerable youth in areas with low Internet connectivity. This project brings digital textbooks, video lessons, and a library of digital library books right into student homes via the Kolibri Learning Platform. With this, they can continue to learn during times when schools are closed due to COVID-19. The U.S. Embassy has provided funding for the transcription of Honduran textbooks onto inexpensive Android tablets and their deployment to students in 30 public schools in Southern Honduras.

Kolibri is developed and maintained by Learning Equality. It delivers a growing library of open educational resources designed for offline teaching and learning via open source software. The software and content are entirely free. It is centered around a learning platform with built-in educator support that can run on a local server device, e.g. laptop. It is complemented by tools to organize these resources and others to the local curriculum. In Honduras, Shoulder to Shoulder has implemented the complete set of textbooks needed for K-12 education plus a digital library of over 1000 books organized by grade level.

Scholarship Student Places 2nd in Reading Contest

Carmen is 2nd place winner in Reading Contest

Carmen is a seventh grader in Hector Orlando Gómez Cisneros high school, in Magdalena, Intibucá. She is one of the many students who is able to stay in school, thanks to the assistance she receives from the StS Scholarship Program. As the coordinator of the Reading Competition, I had the pleasure of meeting Carmen and listening to her read to me. Of the 75 students who participated in the Reading Contest; Carmen came in 2^nd place.Here, in her own words, Carmen explains how being a scholarship recipient, and receiving a computer tablet, have impacted her life.

I did not read before entering this Reading Contest, because I did not know reading was a thing l liked to do. More than a hobby, reading is becoming my passion.

While school was great, the rest of my life was not very easy. I am the child of a single mother so while mom worked, I had to stay at home with my grandparents and my siblings. They encouraged me to be a good student because they said it would bring benefits to my life. And so I did my best at school.

When I got the computer tablet for being a part of the scholarship program, I learned something really important. I learned that I love to read! Now I read to my little cousins, to my grandparents, to my siblings, and to all of my family.

I am working hard to accomplish all the goals I have in life. My grades have improved a lot and what gets me motivated is knowing that my future matters to me.
